What Causes Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)?

There are two main causes of CKD: diabetes and high blood pressure are responsible for the majority of cases of CKD.

Diabetes is the name for a condition in which blood sugar levels are too high.

High blood pressure or hypertension appears when blood pressure rises

Other conditions that affect the kidneys are:

  • Glomerulonephritis, a group of diseases that damage the part of the kidney that filters blood (called glomeruli).
  • Hereditary diseases, such as polycystic kidney disease which causes large cysts to form in the kidneys, damaging the surrounding tissue.
  • Recurrent infections of the urinary tract, stones, tumors.
